Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting is the world’s only movement for every girl and any girl because we believe that each of them deserves to be the best they can be. Girl Guides and Girl Scouts learn by doing, make friends and have fun. In brave, local spaces, girls develop the skills and attitudes to change themselves, their communities and our world. The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) supports 153 national Girl Guide and Girl Scout organisations around the world to be united, thriving and growing.
The Learning and Leadership Development Team supports the Girl Guide and Girl Scout Movement to empower girls and women as leaders through the power of non-formal learning. We work in partnership with volunteers to support better understanding of the characteristics of quality Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting across the Movement. They will spend a significant proportion of their time providing SRHiE capacity strengthening, preparedness, readiness, and response support and delivering technical and strategic guidance during country-led emergency responses, as well as coordinating additional support across the Health Unit and other technical units and sectors. She/He will also serve as a resource for EmU’s deployed Emergency Health Emergency Response Team (ERT) Staff and Emergency Surge Team (EST) members, providing support on MISP implementation, partnerships and data collection tools/systems and technical resources, as needed. This role will also support the design and launch of IRC’s Center of Excellence for SRHiE, promoting global learning, advocacy and accountability for the MISP. Finally, the incumbent will be the central focal point for SRH initiatives in the emergency health sphere, including tools and strategic guidance development and refinement, advocacy, research, partnerships, business development, frameworks, and anticipatory guidance.Job requirements:• Master of Public Health, or equivalent, with background in SRHR; A medical/nursing/midwifery degree is a strong plus• Approximately 7+ years of progressive public health related international field experience in SRH in low income countries and humanitarian settings, including experience implementing the MISP. Human rightsAround the world, women and girls face injustice and violence simply because they are women. The justice system is supposed to protect women, but all too often, courts perpetuate discrimination or remain beyond the reach of those in need.
The Clooney Foundation for Justice’s Waging Justice for Women Fellowship provides annual mentoring and training to early-career African women lawyers in order to cultivate the next generation of justice champions for women and girls in their communities.
How It WorksThe WJW Fellowship offers early-career women lawyers a yearlong, fully funded immersive work experience at one of the leading human rights organizations in Africa. The Fellowship equips fellows with the tools they need to challenge and combat human rights violations, especially those affecting women and girls, through mentoring, training and access to some of Africa’s leading human rights experts, lawyers, judges, activists and academics.Fellows are expected to:
- Support the legal work of their host organizations which may include providing direct legal assistance to individuals, legal research, legal representation, drafting submissions, engaging in advocacy and speaking at events. The specific tasks depend on the mandate and focus of the host organization.
- Identify and support at least one strategic litigation case designed to advance women and girls’ rights in national, regional or international courts or UN mechanisms.
- Carry out at least two outreach activities to students at a school or university on advancing women and girls’ rights during the fellowship.
- Engage in the Fellowship Program activities, including mentoring, training and networking opportunities.
Required Qualifications- A law degree from a recognized academic institution
- Practicing Certificate and work authorization:
- The applicant must be admitted to practice as a lawyer in the country of the selected host organization.
- Fellows are expected to be based in the country of their host organization, and as such, should have the right to work in the host organization’s country. Our host organizations are based in The Gambia, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Tanzania.
- Please note that regional organizations – the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA), based in The Gambia, and the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU), based in Tanzania – are willing to accept applications from qualified candidates licensed to practice law in other African countries. They may be able to support some international relocation costs and work permits in such cases. However, for all other organizations, costs relating to international relocation and acquiring work authorization cannot be supported.
- Relevant work experience:
- At least two years of post-qualification experience in the legal field. As this fellowship is for early-career women lawyers, we will be less likely to consider women with more than five years of legal experience post-qualification.
- Experience in women’s rights and working in human rights organizations is preferred.
