Economic justice Education Gender equality and Social inclusion (GESI)
Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) is the peak body for unions in Victoria.

The Workplaces for Women project works to advance gender equality and eliminate gendered harm at work, particularly in gender-segregated industries.

We work directly with workers, workplace leaders and unions to build their capacity to create workplaces where women are safe, respected, equal and included.

The project delivers training and worker development, builds strategic networks, conducts research and develops practical resources and organising tools. We work closely with VTHC affiliate unions, industry stakeholders, employers, the ACTU and other Trades and Labour Councils.

The role
We’re looking for a Trainer to work on our Workplaces for Women project.

We’re looking for someone who can develop and deliver engaging, practical union education that moves people to action.

This isn’t a traditional education role. We don’t train people simply to transfer knowledge. Our training builds workers’ skills, confidence and capacity to organise, take action and make change in their workplaces.

You might be an organiser who loves facilitating a room, a trainer who understands organising, or someone from the union movement, progressive or community sector who has discovered they have a knack for helping people learn and act.

We’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic, creative, practical and willing to give things a crack. You’ll be comfortable working at pace, adapting training for different groups and turning an idea or complex issue into a great training session.

Duties include
  • Delivering engaging, participatory non-accredited training to workers, delegates, union officials and other workplace leaders.
  • Adapting existing training for different workers, industries, workplaces and audiences.
  • Developing and delivering new training that builds women’s skills, confidence and capacity to organise and take action for gender equality at work; from small group sessions of fewer than 20 participants to large-scale training on International Working Women’s Day.
  • Recruiting training participants via phone calls and email blasts.
  • Helping participants identify practical next steps following training and opportunities to continue organising.
  • Contributing to evaluating and continually improving our training.
  • Other duties as required.

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering engaging, participatory training in an adult-learning environment.
  • Experience in the union movement or the progressive movement, organising, campaigning or community education, with an understanding of how education can build people’s capacity to take collective action.
  • A demonstrated ability to develop high-quality training and adapt content in response to emerging needs, different audiences and feedback.
  • An understanding of gender inequality and gendered workplace harm.
  • A basic understanding of relevant workplace and industrial laws, such as the Fair Work Act 2009, Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic), Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012 and discrimination legislation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to build rapport with workers, delegates, union officials and other stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice, gender equality and trade union principles.
