Girls Not Brides are seeking are consultant to provide technical assistance to Girls Not Brides Kenya to strengthen members’ collective advocacy around the launch and socialisation of the National Strategy to End Harmful Practices. The consultant will support the national partnership members to build the skills, tools, and strategies needed to ensure the strategy is widely known, understood, and embraced across communities, civil society, and government stakeholders.

Key Tasks
  • Strengthen advocacy capacity: Provide tailored technical support and enhance members’ capacities to enable them to design, coordinate, and sustain effective advocacy and public engagement.
  • Review and enhance advocacy strategy: Lead a participatory review of the current Girls Not Brides Kenya advocacy strategy.Give recommendations for adjustments to sharpen the national partnership’s positioning within Kenya’s policy landscape and amplify members’ collective voice.
  • Clarify advocacy priorities: Support members to define clear advocacy priorities, messaging, and alliance-building approaches. Guide members in identifying and articulating clear policy asks related to the National Strategy to End Harmful Practices. Propose ways to strengthen relationship management with government, CSOs, private sector, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop advocacy tools: Create practical tools outlining priority policy and budget asks, stakeholder mapping, and influence pathways. Align engagement with key policy milestones and priorities. Train members on effective use of the tools for consistent national-level advocacy.
  • Address communication risks: Develop a resource to help members anticipate and manage communication risks.Provide guidance on risk analysis, adaptive messaging, and proactive relationship management to sustain credible and impactful advocacy.

Required Qualifications and Experience
  • Advocacy & Communications Expertise: Proven experience leading advocacy, communications, and stakeholder engagement in civil society or development contexts, with a track record of influencing policy and practice to advance girls’ rights and end harmful practices.
  • Thematic Knowledge: Strong understanding of the policy landscape as well as child marriage, gender equality and children’s rights issues in Kenya and globally, with the ability to connect national efforts to regional and global movements.
  • Collaborative Leadership: Demonstrated ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, from grassroots organisations to government actors, ensuring meaningful participation and leadership of girls and young people.
  • Influencing Skills: Excellent communication, facilitation, and media engagement skills, with the ability to amplify girls’ voices and shape narratives that challenge harmful practices and mobilize collective action.
  • Education Qualifications: Advanced degree in social sciences, gender studies, development studies, communications, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience demonstrating expertise in advocacy and movement building.
  • Movement Values: Clear commitment to Girls Not Brides’ vision and values: centering girls’ leadership, fostering collective action, and advancing a world free from child marriage and harmful practices.
