The GALA Queer Archive is a non-profit archive based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Founded in 1997, GALA aims to act as a catalyst for the production, preservation and dissemination of information about the history, culture and contemporary experiences of LGBTQI+ people in South Africa, and beyond. In addition to the archive program, GALA is also involved with research, youth work, public education programs, book publishing, film screenings, exhibitions, conferences and dialogues. We use these methods and events to bring the archive to the public, as well as to build the archive through public contributions and engagement.
Responsibilities
- Manage GALA’s digital platforms, primarily the GALA website, Facebook page, and Instagram account. This includes generating, designing, formatting, and uploading content, adapting posts for different platforms, and monitoring messages, comments, and engagement.
- Work collaboratively with GALA staff to develop regular content that reflects the organisation’s archival, educational, outreach, and organisational work, and assist team members in shaping content for public audiences.
- Compile, edit, and design the GALA Times newsletter, ensuring consistency in tone, visual identity, and messaging.
- Develop and design digital and print invitations, adverts, and promotional materials for GALA events and programmes.
- Assist in the development and design of ad-hoc publications and resources, such as pamphlets, educational materials, and information guides.
- Manage and maintain GALA’s mailing list, including organising contacts and supporting the distribution of newsletters and announcements.
- Support the GALA Administrator in managing and maintaining GALA’s library system, including assisting with digital records and basic organisational improvements.
- Monitor and collect media coverage related to LGBTIQ+ issues in Africa, contributing to GALA’s ongoing media and archival collections.
- Assist in keeping the physical and digital library spaces organised and accessible, and support ongoing improvements where needed.
- As part of a small, dedicated team, provide general organisational support, including assisting with events, organisational activities, networking, and contributing to reporting or administrative tasks when required.
