Gender-based violence (GBV) Movement building
  1. Background and Rationale
The WARD Foundation is a trailblazing force dedicated to strengthening global public health and development capacities in the African region.  Our mission is clear: to empower communities, eliminate stigma, and drive sustainable change in the fight against HIV, TB, SGBV, and other pressing health challenges. Join us in building a healthier, more resilient future for all.

  1. Objectives of the Consultancy
The consultancy aims and objectives to:
  1. To develop a comprehensive Gender Transformative Digital Storytelling Toolkit that empowers individuals to create compelling narratives, as well as transform harmful gender norms and stereotypes and amplification of voices.
  2. The toolkit should promote participatory approaches, critical reflection, and socio ecological models for understanding gender dynamics.
  3. To create a user-friendly Facilitator Guide and Participant Guide that outlines session plans, aims and objectives, and methodologies, and tools for use by community facilitators.
  4. To ensure contextual relevance of the Toolkit to the experiences of women in SIOC-CDT mining communities in Limpopo and Northern Cape, South Africa.
  5. To embed principles of safeguarding, inclusion, “Do no harm” and ethical storytelling principles.

Scope of Work
The consultant will be responsible for developing a comprehensive, context-specific toolkit and Facilitator and Participant guide on gender transformative approaches and digital storytelling for the KARABELO – GBVF Response Programme’s Women Economic Empowerment component. This will involve reviewing relevant programme materials, baseline research findings, and best practices in gender and storytelling interventions. The consultant will design an engaging, participatory toolkit that includes practical exercises, reflection prompts, and digital storytelling activities that can be used by trainers and facilitators at the community level.

Additionally, the consultant will develop a user-friendly facilitator’s guide with clear instructions, session outlines, implementation tips, and adaptable tools suitable for use in low-resource and rural settings. The materials must reflect the lived experiences of women in the target communities, promote inclusive and ethical storytelling, and embed safeguarding and rights-based principles. All deliverables should be submitted in both editable and ready-to-print formats.

Deliverables
The consultant is expected to submit:
  1. Draft Toolkit, Facilitator’s, and Participant’s Guide
  2. Final Gender Transformative Approaches and Digital Storytelling Toolkit including Facilitator’s and Participant’s Guide (clearly structured and field-ready)
  3. Summary document highlighting job aides, ice breakers, activities, use cases, and implementation notes

Qualifications and Experience Required
  • Advanced degree in Gender Studies, Development Communication, Public Health, or related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in gender transformative programming, GBV prevention, and social norm change.
  • Demonstrated experience in participatory digital storytelling, media production, and advocacy communication.
  • Strong facilitation and training skills, especially with women, youth, and marginalized groups.
  • Knowledge of ethical storytelling, safeguarding practices, and community engagement.
  • Excellent communication skills in English; local South African languages are an asset.
