Gender equality and Social inclusion (GESI)
The Organisation
The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is a policy and action research organisation promoting sustainable development and linking local priorities to global challenges. We are based in London and work on five continents with some of the world’s most vulnerable people to strengthen their voices in the decision-making arenas that affect them.
Main responsibilities
1. Strategic leadership at secretariat and platform level (25%)
• Lead the operationalisation of GESI within platform level plans, strategic documents and governance structures and ensure this is accounted for in the transition plan to an LDC-owned facility.
• Lead coordination of the GESI working group (WG) and develop a comprehensive strategy to effectively embed GESI considerations across LIFE-AR countries in line with the LDC Offers, Asks and Principles.
2. Strategic & Technical Support to LIFE-AR Countries (45%)
• Working with GESI focal points, coordinate the operationalisation of GESI in the design and implementation of national delivery mechanisms with particular attention to meaningfully engaging marginalised groups and mitigating the risk of elite capture.
• Conduct comprehensive capacity needs assessments within the working group and LIFE-AR countries to identify GESI-related gaps and design country-specific plans to address them.
3. Support to Learning and Capabilities: (15%)
• Collaborate with the learning lead to integrate GESI learning agendas into LIFE-AR peer learning activities, promoting lesson sharing and knowledge exchange to enhance GESI outcomes at national and global level.
• Participate in the LIFE-AR Community of Practice as a platform to raise GESI questions and facilitate learning and sharing of approaches and best practices, incorporating GESI evidence from implementation.
4. Research and innovation (5%)
• Lead the development and testing of innovative and business unusual gender and social inclusion methodologies, approaches, and designs to support adaptive management of LIFE-AR.
• Develop research and learning products demonstrating the impact of LIFE-AR on women, youth and other marginalised groups through research reports, blogs, Vlogs, impact assessment reports among others.
5. Management, Coordination and Reporting (5%)
• Work closely with LIFE-AR component leads and the wider secretariat to ensure that GESI processes and information are feeding into different engagements across LIFEAR countries, platform and global level.

Qualifications
- Graduate degree in gender studies, social sciences, climate change, sustainable development or closely related field OR equivalent work experience in GESI within the context of for climate change adaptation/resilience
- Excellent understanding of how gender equality and social inclusion intersects with climate change adaptation and resilience. Familiarity with concepts such as intersectionality, gender justice and social vulnerability in the context of climate change
- Proficiency in using gender analysis frameworks (such as the gender analysis matrix, gender impact assessment) and social inclusion methodologies to inform and guide climate adaptation programs
- Quantitative and qualitative methodologies for gender and social inclusion. Ability to interpret data and generate insights that inform policy and practice.
- Fluent in English
