Who are we?
The fundamental challenge of learning about the African continent is that knowledge sources are scattered across different websites, limited, expensive and poorly presented. Where online resources do exist, they are focused on North American and European Afro-descendents, and members of the diaspora. This is where we come in.
afrorama is an accessible, representative, and compelling encyclopaedia of the African continent. Our mission is to improve education of African topics worldwide. Our platform’s core content consists of 500-600 word articles, free of access and written by volunteer contributors subject to editorial review. Articles are also equipped with media (photo and/or video) and an audio recording for accessibility.
What is the role?
Are you naturally curious? Do you enjoy writing? Are you passionate about positive storytelling of the African continent? Then the afrorama lab is for you!
We are looking for writers to join the afrorama lab. Writers develop articles on different African topics for our digital and accessible encyclopedia. In doing so, you will play a critical role in building afrorama, and growing awareness of African topics worldwide.
Why join the afrorama lab?
- Read about African topics and share them with the world - it's a win-win
- Get recognised for your work on our website
- Engage with a flexible volunteer commitment (5-15 hours per month according to your availability)
- Join a vibrant like-minded community passionate about positive storytelling of Africa
- Participate in capacity building opportunities within the lab (writing, grant-writing, social media management…)
- Join an adventure contributing to an ambitious initiative!
Please note that this position is remote (online) and unpaid. afrorama is a not-for-profit organisation and relies on donations.
What do we stand for?
Our work is guided by the following principles:
- Inclusive: The platform design and content are created to ensure accessibility. The content strives to reflect all stakeholders and cultures in the narrative, breaking existing power relations related to gender, race, age, ethnicity, disability, and sexuality.
- Balanced: Content is well-researched. All African countries are given equal representation on the platform. The platform also ensures an equal representation of genders.
- Forward-looking: Content is non-confrontational. The platform challenges mainstream knowledge sources and creates space for dialogue.
- Decolonial: afrorama highlights African thought and knowledge in different domains. This perspective ensures the voices of African people and people of African descent are central to the narrative.
